Privacy Policy

Local ("we", "our", "the app") is an iOS app that recommends places in London. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and the rights you have over it. We have written it in plain language so you can read it in a few minutes.
The short version. We collect the minimum data needed to run the app and personalise your recommendations. We do not track you across other apps or websites. We do not sell your data. Your data is stored in the European Union (Supabase, Stockholm region). You can delete your account and all associated data from inside the app at any time.
1. What we collect, and why
The table below mirrors the categories you will see on our App Store privacy label. Every category is linked to your account and used only for the purpose stated — never for advertising or cross-app tracking.
Identifiers
- What
- A user ID generated when you first open the app (anonymous sign-in) or when you sign in with Apple or Google.
- Why
- To save your profile, lists, and taste preferences across sessions and devices.
- Retention
- Kept while your account exists. Permanently deleted when you delete your account from Profile → Settings → Delete Account.
Contact Info
- What
- Your email address, only if you sign in with Apple or Google. We do not ask for a phone number.
- Why
- Authentication only — so you can sign in on a new device and so we can contact you about your account or a data request.
- Retention
- Kept while your account exists. Deleted with the rest of your account.
User Content
- What
- Lists you create (Favourites, Been, Want to Go), places you save, taste-feedback signals (e.g. "Looks good" / "Not for me"), follows, and any profile fields you fill in.
- Why
- To power your lists, your Taste Shape, and the social features (followers and shared lists).
- Retention
- Kept while your account exists. Deleted with the rest of your account.
Location
- What
- Coarse device location (latitude / longitude) when you have granted "While Using the App" permission.
- Why
- To rank places by distance and walking time and to show the neighbourhood you are in. The app does not function as a location tracker.
- Retention
- Sent to our server only when you request a fresh set of recommendations. Used to compute the result and then discarded — we do not build a long-term location history.
Usage Data
- What
- Product interaction events — which screens you open, which cards you tap, which recommendations you save or dismiss.
- Why
- To improve which recommendations we show you, and to measure (in aggregate) what is working in the product.
- Retention
- Per-event records kept while your account exists. Aggregated, anonymised stats may be retained after account deletion (they contain no identifier that links back to you).
Diagnostics
- What
- Crash reports and basic performance data.
- Why
- To find and fix bugs.
- Retention
- Not linked to your user ID. Kept up to 90 days then discarded.
2. Tracking
We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. There are no advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics that fingerprint your device, and no tracking pixels in this website. Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt is therefore not shown by Local.
3. Where your data lives
All account data is stored with Supabase in the eu-north-1 region (Stockholm, European Union). Data in transit is protected with TLS; data at rest is encrypted by the database provider. The app communicates with our servers over HTTPS only.
4. Third parties we rely on
- Supabase — database, authentication, and edge functions. EU region.
- Apple Sign in with Apple / Google Sign-In — optional authentication providers. We receive only your name and email address.
- Apple Intelligence (FoundationModels) — runs entirely on your device. No personal data is sent to Apple by Local for AI features.
- OpenStreetMap — the public source for some place data. No personal data is shared with OpenStreetMap.
We do not sell or rent your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
5. Your rights
Under UK GDPR and the EU GDPR you have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you; correct it; have it deleted; restrict or object to certain processing; and receive a copy in a portable format. To exercise any of these rights, email ed@local-app.co.uk. We respond within 30 days.
You can delete your account — and every piece of data linked to it — from inside the app at any time: Profile → Settings → Delete Account. This is permanent and effective immediately.
6. Children
Local is rated 4+ but is intended for adults choosing where to go in London. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, email us and we will delete it.
7. Changes to this policy
If we make a material change — for example, adding a new category of data we collect — we will update the "Updated" date at the top of this page and surface the change inside the app before it takes effect.
